Zippy, the deaf Boston Terrier goes for Gold at dfs Crufts

Vicky Tate and Zippy GCDS Gold AwardZippy, a deaf Boston Terrier, wowed the crowd today at dfs Crufts in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme (GCDS) Ring.  Zippy and his owner, Vicky Tate, were part of the GCDS Gold Award team demonstrating training exercises and responsible dog ownership.

Zippy is only 20 months old and was born deaf.  He is the first deaf dog that Vicky has owned and he has successfully passed all three levels of the GCDS with the Billericay Dog Training School.  He passed the GCDS Bronze Award by the time he was one year old and has completed both the Silver and Gold Awards this year.

Vicky said: “As Zippy can’t hear me, it is important that we have eye contact, so he can see the hand signals for the commands.  Generally, I touch his nose first and then touch my nose to make sure he is looking at me before I give him the hand signal.

“Zippy is a clever dog and very quick to learn.  He is a real inspiration and has excelled at the GCDS.  I am very proud of how quickly Zippy has achieved his Gold Award and now we have another Boston Terrier puppy, called Woody, and I can’t wait to start GCDS classes with him.”
