Digit, a three year old Working Cocker Spaniel and Stephen Sutherland, age 21, from Dorking, Surrey have won the Kennel Club Novice Cup at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts on Thursday 5th March.
Stephen and Digit won in the medium category after competing in an exciting agility final against the top dogs that had qualified for Crufts at the KC International Agility Festival last August.
Proud owner Stephen said: “I have competed in quite a few Crufts before which I have loved, but it was the first year for Digit – and I had never won before, so that is special. I’m really happy, it is just good to be here really so to win as well is fantastic – it is what we work and train hard for. She was so good out there; she listened to me the whole way. I competed in the YKC arena before, so it is a great experience to be in the main ring. I have received loads of texts of congratulations from friends who are watching the live stream online, so that is nice.
“Digit had a litter about 15 months ago, so I am hoping to come back next year with one of her sons – that would be a pretty special thing to do.”
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said: “The Novice Cup is a great event and just to qualify for a Crufts final is a wonderful achievement.
“Stephen and Digit’s performance at Crufts was brilliant and they worked very well as a team, which is crucial when competing in agility. We would like to congratulate them on their wonderful achievement.”
Crufts takes place from 5 - 8 March 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham. For more information, please visit www.crufts.org.uk.
