Young Kennel Club Artist of the Year returns for Crufts

The artistic talents of young dog lovers are to be revealed at Crufts 2013, as the fifth Young Kennel Club Artist of the Year competition announces its winners.

The annual art competition run by the Young Kennel Club (YKC) has seen a record-breaking year and entries surpassed expectations, demonstrating not just artistic talent, but imagination and style. This year’s theme, ‘My Best Friend’, clearly struck a chord with members, as they were asked to illustrate the qualities of a true best friend. All the winning images will be on display on the YKC stand at Crufts from March 7th – 10th.

The overall winner, 17 year old Mille Clark from Littlehampton, West Sussex entered a thought-provoking image that really captured the sense of the competition. Judge, Dog World’s ‘The Dog in Art’ columnist, Nick Walters said: “I really enjoyed judging the YKC Artist of the Year competition. These young talented artists have all entered into the spirit of this year’s theme and proved in so many ways just how much dogs mean to them.

“The winners in each category were all well deserving, with the 6-11 year group being particularly strong. The overall winner though came from the 17-24 year group. Millie Clark has painted herself and her younger brother with the two dogs. The composition and balance were perfect and although none of the players acknowledge each other, there was empathy between them and a certain poignancy as they walked along the road looking to the unknown.”

As well as having their art work on display at the world’s greatest dog show, all age group winners will receive a bumper artist gift set and YKC goodies, As the overall winner, Millie will also receive free YKC membership and a family ticket to Crufts.
