Vulnerable breed makes it through to Crufts final

One of the vulnerable British and Irish breeds has beaten thousands of dogs today (Friday March 9th) to win Best In Group at Crufts.

Merlin (Sh Ch/Am Ch Whistlestop’s Elements of Magic) aged 2, an Irish Water Spaniel from Carlisle has qualified for the final of the World’s Greatest Dog Show, Crufts at the NEC on Sunday. Over 21,000 dogs are competing over the four days of the show, for the chance to win the most celebrated title in the world of dogs.

Owner, Judith Carruthers and Merlin will be returning to the NEC Arena on the evening of Sunday March 11th for the highly anticipated Crufts 2012 final. Only seven dogs make it all the way through to the final, which will be watched by thousands in the arena and millions more worldwide as it will be televised live on More4 and streamed on the official Crufts YouTube Channel -

Proud owner and Kennel Club Assured Breeder Judith said: “This was a real shock, but now I am really looking forward to Sunday. He’s won three all breed Best in Show titles and was top Gundog in 2011.“

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director, said: “We were delighted to see Merlin chosen as the Best in Group winner today, he is such a lovely dog that clearly loves being in the show ring and has a great relationship with his handler. Reaching the Best in Show final at Crufts is a fabulous achievement for any dog, and we wish Merlin the very best for the final. I’m sure that all of Carlisle will be tuning in to More4 and rooting for them to win on Sunday evening.”
