Dog lovers are invited to come along to enjoy the experience of seeing over 5,500 dogs and their owners as they take part in the Border Union Agricultural Society Championship Dog Show this weekend at Springwood Park, Kelso.
Close to 100 breeds will compete for the ultimate 'Best in Show' prize and for a chance to compete at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts.
The show is one of 37 Group and General Championship Dog Shows licensed by the Kennel Club throughout the year which enable dogs to qualify for next year’s Crufts.
Each day will host different breeds of pedigree dog, which are divided into seven groups. On Saturday 18th June, visitors can see the Gundog, Hound and Terrier groups being judged, followed by the Working, Pastoral, Utility and Toy groups on Sunday 19th June. The seven group winners will then compete for the prestigious Best in Show award at the climax of the show on Sunday evening. Brian Stevenson, Secretary of the Border Union Agricultural Society (Canine Section), said: “The show is set in the lovely surroundings of Springwood Park in Kelso and attracts people from all over the country and over the border. Visitors will not only get to see this unique show and the thousands of dogs competing over the two days, but they can also visit the nearby castles, stately homes and splendid countryside, as well as enjoying the local facilities.”
Entry to the Border Union Agricultural Society Championship Dog Show is £5 for adults and £3 for senior citizens and children under 14 and parking is free. Mr Stevenson added: “We do not allow dogs to be left in cars under any circumstances and we have set up a tent for un-entered dogs to stay in, so there are no excuses. Any donations for this service are passed on to local animal charities.”
