Border Collies make it all the way to the top at DFS Crufts

The Grand Final of the Breeders Competition took place for the first time at DFS Crufts on 12 March night, with a team of Border Collies winning the coveted title in front of a packed Arena at DFS Crufts 2010.

Judith Gregory and her four winning Border ColliesJudith Gregory, from Iron Acton in Bristol, took the award with dogs she had bred Lizzy, Sugar, Shimmy and Illusion. Judge Mr Jeff Horswell selected Mrs Gregory’s team for the prize as the breeder with the best overall quality evident in her dogs, with the Boxers bred by Yvonne Miller taking the reserve prize. Both competitors were presented with a silver trophy in front of a delighted NEC crowd.

Over the past year breeders around the country have competed in the Breeders’ Competition, sponsored by Agria Pet Insurance, providers of the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan and Breeder Plan. Breeders have showcased their talents by competing with teams of four dogs that they have all personally bred to show off their stock.

Launched at the Manchester Dog Show Society Championship Show in January 2009, the competition is open to all dog breeders and has developed in popularity with up to 100 entrants taking part in some Groups at General Championship Shows.

Both Judith and Yvonne are Kennel Club Accredited Breeders, meaning they abide by good breeding practices and fulfil stringent health testing requirements specific to their breed.

Judith Gregory said of winning the award; "I'm overwhelmed, this is such an amazing achievement. I knew the team were doing well but never thought we would win. I am absolutely thrilled to have picked up this award."
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director said: “Congratulations go to Mrs Gregory on her wonderful achievement. Her dogs are simply beautiful and a real testament to the time and effort she has made in developing sound breeding practices to breed healthy, happy dogs.”
