Pomeranians triumph at Crufts

Not content with winning the Best in Group on Thursday, more Pomeranians won at Crufts on Friday (March 9th) in the Grand Final of the Kennel Club Breeders’ Competition.

Winning the annual competition with her team of Pomeranians was Averil Cawthera-Purdy from Gloucestershire. Averil and her winning team of dogs beat 45 other breeders to receive the award, selected by judge, Stuart Plane as the team with the best overall quality evident.

A team of Border Terriers bred by Kate Irving was selected by the judge to take the reserve prize at the NEC Arena at Crufts. Both competitors were presented with a silver trophy in front of the delighted crowd.

Over the past year, breeders around the country have competed in the Breeders’ Competition, supported by Agria Pet Insurance.

Averil said of winning the award; "We’re absolutely over the moon. It’s amazing to win but as always it’s taking part that counts. Obviously it’s a competition, and obviously there will be a winner – but it is more important that the dogs all look good and play their part.”

“We had a small problem with our lead dog, Bunny, who is not used to the surface in the Arena at Crufts – she became a bit fidgety, and started creeping a bit – but it was all right in the end, the dogs always pull through.”

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director said: “Congratulations to Averil and her team on their wonderful achievement. Their dogs are full of quality and a real testament to the time and effort they have made in developing sound breeding practices to produce healthy, happy dogs.”

Agria Pet Insurance is proud to be supporting a competition which provides the opportunity for the UK’s foremost dog breeders to showcase their breeding knowledge and pedigree stock.

At the beginning of last year, with the aim of achieving a more exciting competition and increased value for its competitors, the competition received a shake up. A new points structure, additional awards and an exciting media partnership was formed with Our Dogs, ensuring regular coverage of the competition.

The changes have been well received; entries are up, as is the competitive spirit of those taking part. As a result Our Dogs introduced the competition’s first official leader board; providing breeders across the UK with an opportunity to record their points and to compare their success with other competitors. The Our Dogs monthly feature has also offered winning breeders a much deserved moment in the spotlight with published team photos and extended competition coverage.

Agria, one of the leading pet insurance companies in the world, has been insuring animals for over 120 years and is dominant in Sweden and other Nordic countries.
