Assistance dog is light of Olympic torch bearer's life
A former maths teacher, who was disabled in a tragic sporting accident, has been inspiring the crowds at Crufts this week after she was chosen to carry the Olympic torch in London.
Wendy Morrell, a keen sportswoman who is now wheelchair bound after a discus hit her in the head during an Olympic qualifying event, was at Crufts with her assistance dog, Caesar to spread her story of triumph over adversity.
Caesar, a golden retriever, has been a pillar of strength for Wendy and helped her to build her confidence up after she suffered from the accident 18 years ago.
Now Wendy, from Dorset and vice president of the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners, is one of four winners in a Samsung sponsored competition to find local heroes. She will carry the Olympic torch in the relay, when it comes to London on April 6.
Speaking about her assistance dog, Caesar, Wendy Said: “Crufts is the perfect opportunity to raise the profile of all dogs and assistance dogs really do change people’s lives. My confidence was at rock bottom after the accident but Caesar has helped me to turn my life around.”
Wendy will be at the Dogs for the Disabled Trade stand at Crufts all week to tell her story and to spread the word about the work of assistance dogs.
