Best in Show winners
Did you know that the awarding of ‘Best in Show’ has existed since 1928? Although there was an eight year gap during WW2, this year is the 80th anniversary of this award. Best in Show winners were predominantly British breeds in the early days, although there were Poodle, Great Dane, Chow Chow and Keeshond winners in the first 20 or so years.
The Cocker Spaniel is by far the most successful breed, winning Best in Show seven times (six of which were shared amongst three dogs from the same kennel). We have compiled the following rankings:
- Cocker Spaniel - 7 wins
- Irish Setter and Welsh Terrier -4 wins
- Greyhound, English Setter, Labrador Retriever, Wire Fox Terrier, Standard Poodle, German Shepherd Dog - 3 wins
- Whippet, Afghan Hound, Pointer, Kerry Blue Terrier, Airedale Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Toy Poodle - 2 wins
- Basenji, Irish Wolfhound, Clumber Spaniel, Flatcoated Retriever, Norfolk Terrier, Bull Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Tibetan Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Dalmatian, Keeshond, Bulldog, Chow Chow, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, St. Bernard, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Great Dane, Pekingese, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier - 1 win
Thanks to the wins of the Cocker Spaniel over the years, the Gundog Group is the most successful in the Crufts Best in Show rankings, closely followed by the Terrier Group. If you have any breed related questions, please get in touch!

i am hoping to breed my border (HAZEL) but to advertise on epupz i bust be a member of the s b t club and to become a member of that i need to be proposed and seconded by someone who has been a member for at least two years. its all so confusing, but thats what you get when you breed your dog.
anyway hazel has a good pedigree, 13 champions including ch ch holcombe jack daniels and int fin dan lux ch double scotch.
hazel would make a good show dog too but when we visited crufts we saw that its a bit boring for the dogs just walking round the ring.
do the dogs enjoy showing?
are you of any one you know a member of the s b t club
and do you have any tips on breeding hazel?
That's true, but that might be the reason that they are so popular.
I have been doing my research about the BTs. The best a Border has done in Crufts is Reserve Best in Show. It was the current breed record holder Ch. Brannigan of Brumberhill who is also my pup's gt gt gt gt grandfather. They both - amazingly - share the same name - Bodie.
i very much hope that a border does win.
im happy they are common yet as you said there are letdowns.
cocker spaniels are really common though
I don't know, but I certainly hope so. I certainly think they can. They aren't overbred, but I think they're popularity might be preventing them from doing better. They're my favourite breed (I have an 8-week-old puppy). Does anyone know the best the breed has done?

I live in NI and unfortunately there aren't even any breed clubs here. I had trouble finding one to start with. There aren't many breeders and the breeders often only have one bitch, so only one litter per year.
