Crufts - Crufts 2008

Welcome!

Welcome to my first blog in the run up to Crufts 2008. I will be at the show for its duration to give an insight into the events taking place each day and would welcome any comments. At the Kennel Club, I deal with the Breed Standards, Breed recognition and connected issues surrounding Breed Health and Welfare.

Each day I will introduce the group or groups of dogs being judged, describe why the dogs are classified in this way and look at one or two breeds in every group.

Crufts is not just about breed competition, leading to the ultimate 'Best in Show award. There is a broad range of other activities to be seen here. Working dogs, assistance dogs and activity dogs will be on display, which are far more concerned with being 'man's best friend' than whether they comply with the Breed Standard.

The Catalan Sheepdog was only recognised by the Kennel Club in 2006. As the Kennel Club writes its own Breed Standards, we like to work closely with the Breed Club or importers on the wording. The Club applied for a Standard in December 2007, so the relevant committee here at the Kennel Club will be looking at this in the very near future.

Please have a look at the What's On page of the Crufts website (http://www.crufts.org.uk/whatson/) to plan what you would like to see while you are at Crufts. You need to remember that only the breeds from the Group(s) on show each date will be in the individual breed rings, so for example, if you are a fan of Terriers you should come along on Sunday. Alternatively you can view all of the breeds each day in 'Discover Dogs'. In the main Arena you can watch the Obedience Competition, or go to the Special Events Ring to see various activities. The important thing is to plan ahead, as the day goes very quickly!

Why does it take the Kennel Club so long to approve the Breed Standard for the Catalan?
The breed has been shown in Europe since 1929.
The standard is very well documented.

Welcome to the KC Blog.
