Young Kennel Club stalwart wins award

Lisa MoirLisa Moir, aged 24, from Penicuik has been commended by the Young Kennel Club (YKC) for her sterling work for the club during her 15 years of being a member.

Along with three other members, Lisa has been selected for a special Shaun McAlpine Award, the highest award for YKC members, which will be presented at the world’s largest dog show, Crufts, on Sunday 9th March. As part of the award, the YKC will assist her in achieving her dream of putting together a ‘book of champions’ for her breed, the German Spitz.

Lisa has been motivated to write the ‘book of champions’ because currently no such book exists for the German Spitz. She hopes the book will act as a ‘snapshot’ of the breed’s history and will allow her to undertake similar projects for other breeds. Lisa has been involved with the breed since 1992 and has been showing dogs ever since.

Eric Smethurst, Young Kennel Club Chairman, said “Once again we are delighted with the high standard of entries received for this year’s Shaun McAlpine Award. It is always rewarding to help members who want to put something back into the wonderful world of dogs and particularly those who wish to record information for future generations to enjoy.”

For the past 20 years, Ed and Cindy McAlpine have presented the Shaun McAlpine Trophy and awards at Crufts at the NEC in Birmingham, in memory of their son Shaun, who was tragically killed in a road accident two weeks after his 22nd birthday in November 1984.  The trophy is awarded annually to encourage young dog owners to become more involved in dog activities, as Shaun himself had achieved considerable success with his Great Dane Ch. Dicarl Tendellie and also acquired a reputation as a talented handler.

The Kennel Club has many links with the dog world and is keen to assist YKC members in achieving their canine ambitions.  The Shaun McAlpine Award is the highest award for members of the Young Kennel Club, encouraging young people to embark on exciting, challenging and fun activities within the world of dogs.  The awards are based upon personal and social development and do not involve direct competition against others.
