Random coat testing - Warning

by Emma Ruby

Exhibitors are reminded that, under Kennel Club Regulations, no substance which alters the natural colour, texture or body of a dog’s coat is allowed to be present in its coat at any time during a show. The same applies to any substance which might alter the natural colour of any other external part of the dog.

The Kennel Club is committed to improving standards and strives for a fair and level playing field; no exhibitor should be allowed to have an unfair advantage over another. The Kennel Club will therefore continue vigorously to enforce Regulation F (B) which covers these issues, and all owners and handlers are reminded to be vigilant to ensure that these regulations are observed.

Enforcement of these provisions is carried out by random testing under strict and fair procedures in order to produce uncontaminated sampling which will ensure reliable forensic results.

If the random testing produces a positive finding then any awards gained will be disqualified and unless the exhibitor provides satisfactory explanations, further penalties may be imposed including those under Kennel Club Rule A42, the rule which allows for the most serious sanction.

Exhibitors should be aware that random coat testing will continue to be carried out during the course of 2008. Any level of show may be selected for the coat testing procedure and this may include the Kennel Club’s own show, Crufts.
