Working Sheepdog wins Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Special Pre-Beginner Obedience Stakes Competition at Crufts 2013

A dog from Erith, Kent, has triumphed at Crufts by winning the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Special Pre-Beginner Obedience Stakes Competition.

Swift, a two and a half year old Working Sheepdog, and his owner Joanna Mayston beat twenty other talented dogs to be crowned the winner of the 2013 Stakes Competition at the world’s greatest dog show.

The competition was created in 2005, to encourage prospective exhibitors who have passed their GCDS Bronze Award to take part in obedience competition. The exercises included in the test are a combination of the current GCDS exercises and the Pre-Beginner Obedience test. Building on the basic training skills learnt through the Good Citizen Dog Scheme, these new stakes help to bridge the gap between basic training and entering a competition.

Dogs entered in the final have to qualify at a heat held in 2012 and then be placed in the top five at one of the 4 semi-finals. Heats were held at 28 locations throughout the UK and competition was fierce.

Swift’s owner Joanna said: “I am absolutely thrilled to win the final at Crufts and still cannot believe it. I started training my dog through the Good Citizen Dog Scheme programme and it has all culminated in this great day”

Maurice Cooke, Good Citizen Dog Scheme Working Party Chairman, added: “This is the eighth time the final has been held at Crufts and it is always a tight competition. Joanna and Swift are not only ‘good citizens’ but have now taken that initial step into competition obedience, and we wish them luck”.
