Rare native breed wins on the first day of dfs Crufts

Breeders' Competition 2011 winnersThe Grand Final of the Breeders Competition took place on the first day of dfs Crufts 2011. Paul and Hilda Monaghan and their team of Clumber Spaniels from Norfolk won the ultimate breeder’s title in front of a packed Arena at the NEC in Birmingham.

Paul and Hilda beat 24 other breeders to receive their award with the dogs they had bred by their side. The winning team of dogs was made up of Harley, Konnie, Kameron and Bailey.

Clumber Spaniels are native to the UK, however only a few are bred each year, last year only 271 puppies were registered with the Kennel Club. Recently the Kennel Club has been campaigning to save the UK’s vulnerable breeds, asking people to look beyond the obvious and to research dog breeds thoroughly, looking at temperament and lifestyle requirements before choosing a breed.

JudgeMr Christofer Habigselected Paul and Hilda for the prize as the breeders with the best overall quality evident in their dogs, with the Boxers bred by Yvonne Miller taking the reserve prize. Both competitors were presented with a silver trophy in front of a delighted crowd in the Arena.

Over the past year, breeders around the country have competed in the Breeders’ Competition, supported by Agria Pet Insurance, providers of the new Kennel Club Healthcare Plan who are proud to be supporting a competition which provides the opportunity for the UK’s foremost dog breeders to showcase their breeding knowledge and pedigree stock.

The competition is open to all dog breeders and has developed in popularity with up to 100 entrants taking part in some groups at Championship Shows over the past year.

Hilda said of winning the award; "It is unbelievable, Clumber Spaniels are a vulnerable breed, there are only a few in the UK so it makes this win a great achievement for the breed.”

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director said: “Congratulations to Paul and Hilda on their wonderful achievement. Their dogs are full of quality and a real testament to the time and effort they have made in developing sound breeding practices to produce healthy, happy dogs.”
