Dog Photographer of the Year Competition launched with Jo Longhurst

The Kennel Club’s Dog Photographer of the Year Competition 2013 was launched at Crufts on Saturday (March 9th), with award-winning artist Jo Longhurst announced as this year’s guest judge.

London-based Royal College of Art graduate, Jo Longhurst will be joining the Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year competition judging panel this year. Jo, who recently won the prestigious Grange Prize for Contemporary Photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, is well known for her work photographing Whippets.

Jo follows in the footsteps of acclaimed photographers Tim Flach and Martin Usborne as a judge of the popular international competition. In 2012, the annual competition attracted over 5,000 entries from around the world and the standard improves year on year.

The competition, which for the second year running will be free for all to enter, is open to both professional and amateur photographers from around the world. There are six categories in the competition: Man’s Best Friend, Dog Portrait, Puppies, Dogs at Work, Dogs at Play and, solely for under 16’s, I Love Dogs Because.

Jo says of the competition: “There is a long history of both professional and amateur photographers making images of dogs. In the past, these photographers tended to be the more affluent dog lovers, who had access to expensive photographic equipment. We are now living in a time of unprecedented access to affordable cameras and image making equipment.

“I hope the entries to the competition will reflect the broad range of equipment in use today, and the many ways in which people now make photographs. I’m looking forward to the judging process, and hope to see a wide range of styles and images which reflect our contemporary experience of living with dogs.”

The Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year competition is now open and accepting submissions until 31st August. For more information, visit www.thekennelclub.org.uk/dogphotocompetition.
