Following hot on the heels of the news of an increase in the number of pedigree puppies registered in 2008, the Kennel Club has announced that the official entry figure for this year’s Crufts Dog Show confirms the ongoing overwhelming popularity of dogs.
Around 28,000 dogs are expected to attend Crufts 2009, which takes place from 5th – 8th March at the NEC, Birmingham, with a total of 22,677 dogs entered into breed judging and the Agility and Obedience Championships. This represents one of the highest entry figures in the show’s long and illustrious history, demonstrating the ongoing love affair between man and his best friend. Crufts has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest dog show and the 2009 event will cement its reputation yet further.
Since the introduction of the Pet Travel Scheme in 2001, Crufts has attracted a growing number of dogs from the four corners of the globe, and several of these have gone on to win top prizes at the show. In 2008, the number of dogs coming to the show from overseas topped the 1,000 mark for the first time and this year’s show is set to follow suit.
As well as the 28,000 dogs expected over the four days of the event, a bumper visitor attendance is also predicted. Crufts 2008 attracted a record crowd of 160,000 people through the doors of the NEC and this year’s show is expected to be just as popular as dog lovers from across the world descend on Birmingham. With the TV cameras absent in 2009, the only place to enjoy everything that the show has to offer is Crufts itself.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Crufts entry figure once again proves that the unique bond between humans and dogs is both remarkable and unbreakable. We look forward to welcoming the many thousands of competitors and visitors alike to the show, and hope that they all take away a great experience of finding out everything that is great about the company of happy and healthy dogs.”
