Call for Britain's most heroic hairy barker

The dfs Crufts Friends for Life competition, the dog equivalent of the Pride of Britain awards, is back again to celebrate the remarkable and life-changing role that dogs play in our lives.

The competition, run by the Kennel Club, celebrates heart-warming stories of friendship in adversity and is looking for dogs which have truly earned the title of man’s best friend through bravery, support or companionship.

The Kennel Club is calling for nominations from people who feel that their life, or the life of somebody that they know, has been changed dramatically by their dog.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson, said: “Dogs play a significant role in our lives. Every day there are dogs out there saving lives in war zones, giving confidence and independence to those with disabilities and showing remarkable bravery and loyalty as pets.

“Friends for Life is an opportunity to celebrate these dogs, who quietly go about changing people’s lives in their own unique and special way. We are looking forward to hearing from anybody who has a heart-warming tale about how their dog has changed their life for the better.

“As a fitting tribute, the winner will take centre stage at the NEC Arena during dfs Crufts, an event which is dedicated to celebrating the diverse role that dogs play in society and the way that they enrich our lives.”

The deadline for nominations is 15 January 2011. The final six will be chosen by a panel of judges and the winner will be chosen by public vote and announced on Sunday 13th March 2011 at dfs Crufts.

Amongst last year’s nominees were Treo, who saved countless lives through his explosives search work in Afghanistan; assistance dog Josie who gave confidence and independence to Sam, her young owner with muscular dystrophy, and bio-detection dog, Coco, who can detect a potentially fatal attack of Addison’s disease in his owner, Karen.

To nominate a dog, please email details of why you think the dog should win the award to Andrea Peters or write to Andrea Peters, The Kennel Club, 1-5 Clarges Street, Piccadilly, London W1J 8AB.
